Claude Pro vs Max Price in 2026: Which Plan Is Worth Paying For?
Claude Pro costs $20 a month, Max $100 or $200. A decision guide by usage profile for small European companies, with a price table checked on 13 October 2026.
Claude Pro costs $20 per month if billed monthly, or $17 per month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front). Claude Max starts from $100 per month: Max 5x is $100 per month and Max 20x is $200 per month, and both are billed monthly only. I checked these prices on Anthropic's pages on 13 October 2026. My rule of thumb: stay on Pro while it covers your week, and move to Max 5x for one month once the usage limit starts stopping real work several times a week.
This guide is for owners and employees of small companies who already use Claude Free or Pro and keep running into the limit, or who have been asked whether the company should pay for Max. I have organised it by how you use Claude, because most of the long feature list on the pricing page is identical on Pro and Max. What changes is mainly how much you can use.

A few details from the small print matter for budgeting. Anthropic states that the prices shown don't include applicable tax, and that prices and plans can change at Anthropic's discretion. The Max prices on the support page apply to web subscriptions; mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform. If you want to pay the listed price, subscribing through the website is the safer route. Anthropic also says it does not offer standard discounted pricing on any paid plan, including Max 5x and 20x, apart from occasional limited-time promotions.
If you think in euros: at the ECB reference rate of 12 October 2026 (1 USD = 0.894 EUR), $20 is about €18, $100 about €89 and $200 about €179. Prices exclude tax, so the checkout screen shows the final amount, including any VAT, before you confirm.
What do you get for the extra money on Max?
More usage, measured against Pro
The core difference is volume. Anthropic's support page says Max gives you 5x or 20x the Pro plan's usage allowance, depending on the tier you choose. Anthropic does not publish an absolute figure for Pro, so you can only compare the plans relative to each other. Max 5x is described as ideal for frequent users who work with Claude on a variety of tasks. Max 20x is described as ideal for daily users who collaborate often with Claude for most tasks.
Higher output limits and priority
According to the pricing page, Max also includes higher output limits for all tasks, early access to advanced Claude features and priority access at high traffic times. The support page adds that Max subscribers receive priority access to Anthropic's newest features and models. If Claude feels slow or busy for you at peak hours, priority access is the part of Max aimed at that.
Models, including Fable
Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are available on both Pro and Max. Free has Sonnet and Haiku but no Opus. The difference shows up with the Fable models. On Max plans, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are a standard part of the plan, and you can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models at no extra cost. Anthropic notes that Fable models draw from your regular weekly limits and use them faster than other Claude models. On Pro, Fable runs on pay-as-you-go usage credits. Pro users can keep using Fable 5 with usage credits or by upgrading to Max.
API credits
Max 5x includes $100 per month and Max 20x $200 per month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform. Free and Pro include none. For a company that is also experimenting with its own integrations, this credit is a real part of the value. For someone who only uses the chat, it is not a reason to upgrade.
Claude Code and Cowork
This is where many people overestimate the gap. Claude Code is already included in Pro, together with Claude Science, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365. Free does not include Claude Code. Anthropic's pricing page also announces that Claude Cowork is now just Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max, with more plans to follow. The support page highlights that Max includes access to Claude Code for terminal-based coding workflows and longer multi-step tasks handed to Claude in the background. So the tools are largely shared; what Max adds is room to use them for longer.
How do the usage limits work?
Two kinds of limit apply. Your session-based usage limit resets every five hours. Max plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models. That combination explains a common experience: you can work intensively for a few hours, hit the session limit, and then continue after the reset, while the weekly limit on Max sets a ceiling on the whole week.
The Fable detail is worth repeating here. Because Fable models use limits faster than other models, choosing Fable for routine tasks spends your allowance more quickly. Picking a lighter model for simple work keeps more room for the tasks that need the heavier one.
Which plan fits your usage profile?
Occasional writing and summaries: Pro
If you use Claude a few times a day for emails, short reports, meeting notes and summaries of a document now and then, Pro is the sensible choice. You get Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365. Anthropic does not publish a message count for Pro. Its help pages say usage depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use, the model and the effort level, so short, focused tasks like these stretch the allowance furthest.
If you are on Free and only need occasional help, Free may still do. The moment you want Opus or Claude Code, Pro is the entry point.
Daily heavy use with long documents, Claude Code or Cowork: Max 5x
This profile describes someone who works with Claude every day across different tasks: contracts and long PDFs, analysis, longer Claude Code sessions, multi-step tasks running in the background. Anthropic's own description of Max 5x (frequent users working on a variety of tasks) fits this well. Anthropic lists attachment size, conversation length, tools such as Research and web search, and multi-step tasks like running code or creating files among the factors that use up the allowance, and Claude Code usage counts toward the same limit as chat. That is why this kind of work reaches the Pro limit sooner than short chats.
At $100 per month, Max 5x costs five times the monthly Pro price for five times the Pro usage, plus $100 per month in API credits and Fable within the weekly limits.
All-day agentic or coding work: Max 20x
Max 20x is for people who hand most of their work to Claude, or who run coding and agentic tasks for much of the day. Anthropic describes it as ideal for daily users who collaborate often with Claude for most tasks. If Max 5x still runs out before the week ends, 20x is the next step. Whether a given workload really needs 20x is hard to judge in advance, so I would only move there after a month on 5x shows you hitting the weekly limit.
A team of three or more: look at Team
Once several people in the company use Claude, compare individual subscriptions with the Team plan, which is for 2 to 150 people. A standard seat costs $20 per seat per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, and gives more usage than Pro. A premium seat, with 5x more usage than a standard seat, costs $100 per seat per month billed annually or $125 billed monthly. Team includes Claude Code and Claude Cowork. A simple sum helps: three Pro subscriptions at $20 monthly come to $60 per month, the same as three standard Team seats billed annually. You can mix the heavy user onto a premium seat and keep the rest on standard ones.
How to decide in a week
You do not need a long analysis. A week of normal work tells you most of what you need to know.
- Start on Pro, billed monthly. At $20 per month you keep flexibility. Switch to the annual plan ($200 up front) only once you are sure Pro is the right level.
- Note every limit message. Write down when you hit the limit, what you were doing and how long you had to wait. When you reach the session or weekly limit, you can wait for the reset or upgrade. If usage credits are enabled, work continues on paid credits instead of stopping, so check that setting too.
- Look at the pattern. One limit hit during an unusual deadline week is not a reason to pay five times more. Repeated hits on ordinary days are.
- Upgrade month to month. Max is billed monthly only, so a month on Max 5x is a contained test. Upgrading from Pro to Max, or from Max 5x to 20x, is charged on a prorated basis for the rest of the billing cycle, and an annual Pro plan leaves you a credit for the remaining balance. Google Play subscriptions are the exception: there you pay the full price of the new plan when you upgrade.
- Reassess after the month. If 5x covered your work comfortably, stay. If you hit the weekly limit, consider 20x. If you rarely came close, go back to Pro.
One more point from what I see in small companies: sometimes the limit problem is really a habits problem. Long, unfocused conversations, re-uploading the same documents and using the heaviest model for every small task all spend the allowance. A team that learns to work efficiently gets more out of either plan. That is what the Claude AI workshop for teams covers: 3 hours, 5 modules, from 950 € for up to 5 people. It is worth considering before you move several people to Max, though the plan decision itself stays the same: start small and upgrade when the limits show you need to.
